"Diversity and inclusion" (D&I) has become quite the buzz phrase. As the media covers more cases of gender or minority bias and sexual harassment in the workplace, organizations are putting a firmer focus on how they can get in front of the issues by establishing programs that address D&I.

A recent report by Willis Towers Watson indicates that 55% of employers have taken steps to communicate their inclusion and diversity initiatives as they pertain to workplace culture and policies, while nearly three-quarters indicate they intend to do so over the next three years. Hollywood is putting more effort than ever before into increasing diversity on and off screen. But there’s still a long way to go. Back in 1996, Christy Haubegger saw a similar problem in the magazine world — there were no American magazines that targeted a Latina audience or that had Latinas on the cover.

So she founded Latina magazine, an English-language beauty, fashion and entertainment magazine for bilingual, bicultural Hispanic women. These days, Haubegger is head of multicultural business development at Creative Artists Agency, one of Hollywood’s top talent and literary brokers, where her job and mission is to diversify Hollywood on and off screen. A growing number of college students are from poor families, but they’re mostly attending less selective institutions, which may decrease their chances of earning a bachelor’s degree.

A new report from the Pew Research Center released Wednesday found that the overall number of undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities has increased during the past 20 years, with students of color and those from low-income families making up much of that growth. The Milwaukee area's Hispanic workforce is expanding, but their presence is lagging in high-wage positions, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum.

We estimate that more than half of the US Hispanic population will use messaging app WhatsApp at least monthly this year. The platform’s US Hispanic user base of 32 million is growing because of its data cost savings, messaging encryption capabilities and popularity in Latin American countries.

WhatsApp is more popular among US Hispanics than Instagram or Twitter, with those platforms seeing 34.3% and 21% user penetration, respectively. Forget everything you thought you knew about Hispanic-American consumers -- because the U.S. Hispanic population is exploding, and it’s shattering old stereotypes as it grows.

The 64 million Hispanics who live in the United States today represent 19.5% of the U.S. population. And Hispanics are the second fastest-growing population segment, with 83% growth since 2000, according to TheHispanic American Market Report.

As recently as a few decades ago, Hispanic Americans were viewed primarily as migrant workers in low-level service occupations. Contrast that with today: The average U.S. Hispanic household will spend $538,636 more than the average non-Hispanic white American household over the course of their respective remaining lifetimes, according to the report.
