The Old Town School of Folk Music and the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University present Lokua Kanza, one of the most accomplished Congolese recording artists on the scene. He is a prolific singer, songwriter, and composer known for his soulful folksy sound, unusual in the land of Soukous. He has worked and performed with the top names in the business such as Papa Wemba, Manu Dibango, Youssou N'Dour, and Angelique Kidjo to name a few. Lokua's music incorporates many natural sounds from the rainforest including the symphonic chants of the pygmies. Lokua Kanza is on a rare U.S. tour with his band and will be making his Chicago debut at The Old Town School. A workshop with Lokua Kanza will be offered in the Thursday Workshop Series on Thursday, May 21st. Free ticketed event. $5 suggested donation.
