The group Maeandros was created in 2006 by musician and songwriter Mavrothis Kontanis to fill two needs: to show traditional folk and classical music representations of Greek and Near Eastern Music as well as more modern, broadly influenced sounds and lyrics. These pieces are not simply trying to translate poetry or writing styles from one language to another, but instead meld together simple melodies and lyrics that invite the listener into the reality and closeness of what is often artificially characterized as "East" or "West." A Greek music workshop with the artists is offered in the Thursday Workshop Series on Thursday, April 30th.
