The General Consulate of Ecuador, Northeastern IL Univ, Arquitectos are co sponsoring the following event and the honor of your attendance is certainly appreciated and helps make the event very successful. The Conquest of European Architecture: Native Masters and the Construction of Colonial QuitoThis is one event that is part of the bicentennial commemoration of the first cry for independence in Latin America, which occurred in Quito, Ecuador. The indigenous contribution to the construction and decoration of colonial Quito has, for the past two centuries, been minimized and frequently overlooked in the literature. Native “artisans” have been characterized as “masses of anonymous manual laborers” who simply followed the designs and instructions of their European masters. Recent research reveals that hundreds of native masters, journeymen, and officials in fact dominated artistic and architectural production in Quito throughout the colonial period. This talk highlights the multiple activities and contributions of indigenous artists and architects in an effort to reintroduce their identities, works, and achievements to the history of colonial Quito.Lecture will be presented in Spanish.Dr. Susan V. Webster is the Jane W. Mahoney Chair in Art and Art History at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a doctorate in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. For the past twelve years she has conducted research in Ecuador on the art and architecture of the colonial period. She is currently at work on a book about native master artists and architects in colonial Quito.(to view the location of the building on the campus: http://www.neiu.edu/IMAGE_BANK/GettingToNEIU/helioweb.jpg)
