BAGWIS is a Chicago-based collective of Filipino cultural workers, activists, and musicians who began writing and performing original music in 1998. Dubbed as "the most important Filipino-American band" by Poptimes Magazine for documenting the Filipino experience through music, their unique "Filipino Folk-Rock" sound reflects the diverse experiences of Filipinos, whether abroad or in the homeland. The group combines traditional folk and rock influences from their homeland in the Philippines with contemporary and urban rhythms — texturizing vocal melodies over subtle grooves. Their songs are a collection of stories that express their community's triumphs and victories over injustice, struggles against oppression and isolation and a path towards freedom and empowerment.
Sign up for a workshop in Philippine music on Thursday, May 3.
