19th STATE OF MIND features artwork from Latino artists who are members of the CISA (Crazy Indiana-Style Artists) Crew, residing in East Chicago, Hammond, and South Chicago, IL. Their street sense and artistic sensibilities are fine-tuned from the harsh realities of living in an economy built around a dying steel industry.
CISA, a pioneer in the graffiti writing movement in the Midwest, formed in 1987 while the artists were in high school. To date, individual and group exhibitions include: SoMA Arts, San Francisco, CA; the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, IL; Swope Museum, Terra Haute, IN; Savanna Gallery for contemporary
Art, Gary, IN; Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis, IN; and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis, IN.
Because they were raised around the steel industries on the southern tip of Lake Michigan, the title 19 STATE OF MIND is based on the unique environment, experiences, influences, and energy that Latino artists absorb and reintroduce to the community as works of art.
Urban mindsets set in insular communities produce interesting works of art that transcend local stereotypes of Midwest Latino art.
