Experts say part of the reason so few Latinx students finish college is that they are ending up at overcrowded, underfunded community colleges as well as less-selective universities like IU Northwest.

With Latinx expected to make up 28.6 percent of the U.S. population by 2060, and well-paying jobs dwindling for workers who don’t hold bachelor’s degrees, pressure is rising on schools like IU Northwest to tailor their services to help more of these students to and through college. The business case for Diversity and Inclusion

8602475889?profile=original

"Diversity and inclusion" (D&I) has become quite the buzz phrase. As the media covers more cases of gender or minority bias and sexual harassment in the workplace, organizations are putting a firmer focus on how they can get in front of the issues by establishing programs that address D&I.

A recent report by Willis Towers Watson indicates that 55% of employers have taken steps to communicate their inclusion and diversity initiatives as they pertain to workplace culture and policies, while nearly three-quarters indicate they intend to do so over the next three years. That’s because far too many of us ignore the most important part — the follow-up.

In fact, according to relationship strategist Zvi Band, those initial networking events are a pointless exercise if you don’t see them as part of a longer, more strategic relationship building process. READ MORE AT CNBC

8602481297?profile=originalAt a recent premiere of the second season of Starz's “Vida,” it was clear that the prime cable television series about the conflicts surrounding a gentrifying Mexican American neighborhood of Los Angeles has touched a nerve among young Latinos.

Even though the critically acclaimed series has a loyal Latino following, "Vida" creators worry about the show's fate — especially after the recent cancellation of the Netflix show "One Day at a Time," which was lauded for nailing Latino representation. READ MORE AT NBC NEWS

Hollywood is putting more effort than ever before into increasing diversity on and off screen. But there’s still a long way to go. Back in 1996, Christy Haubegger saw a similar problem in the magazine world — there were no American magazines that targeted a Latina audience or that had Latinas on the cover.

So she founded Latina magazine, an English-language beauty, fashion and entertainment magazine for bilingual, bicultural Hispanic women. These days, Haubegger is head of multicultural business development at Creative Artists Agency, one of Hollywood’s top talent and literary brokers, where her job and mission is to diversify Hollywood on and off screen. A growing number of college students are from poor families, but they’re mostly attending less selective institutions, which may decrease their chances of earning a bachelor’s degree.

A new report from the Pew Research Center released Wednesday found that the overall number of undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities has increased during the past 20 years, with students of color and those from low-income families making up much of that growth. Those students are mostly attending the least-selective colleges and universities, which tend to have fewer resources to help students succeed. READ MORE AT INSIDE HIGHER ED

We estimate that more than half of the US Hispanic population will use messaging app WhatsApp at least monthly this year. The platform’s US Hispanic user base of 32 million is growing because of its data cost savings, messaging encryption capabilities and popularity in Latin American countries.

WhatsApp is more popular among US Hispanics than Instagram or Twitter, with those platforms seeing 34.3% and 21% user penetration, respectively. For greater context, that means there are 10 million more US Hispanics on WhatsApp than Instagram, and almost triple more than Twitter. READ MORE AT EMARKETER

The face of America is changing, and the housing market is changing along with it. If the mortgage market doesn’t keep up, the nation’s economy will bear the consequences.

The mortgage market has a long history of underserving communities of color, yet by 2045, people of color will make up more than half of our population. If the mortgage market can’t find a way to better serve these communities, what has long been a moral problem will eventually become a broader economic one.

Take Hispanic Americans. Over the next quarter century, more than half of new households in this country will be formed by Hispanic Americans. READ MORE AT WASHINGTON POST

Maybe the composition of an organization’s board is determined by the insights, expertise and influence of its members. Or maybe that board is made up of individuals who are leaders in their respective fields, which helps to elevate the perception of an organization’s stature. Or maybe it’s that an organization wants its board of directors to reflect the makeup of the customers it services.

Whichever it may be, a company’s corporate boardroom is a statement of its values and sends a message to the market about what is important to its current and future success. READ MORE AT HOUSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL

Forget everything you thought you knew about Hispanic-American consumers -- because the U.S. Hispanic population is exploding, and it’s shattering old stereotypes as it grows.

The 64 million Hispanics who live in the United States today represent 19.5% of the U.S. population. And Hispanics are the second fastest-growing population segment, with 83% growth since 2000, according to TheHispanic American Market Report.

As recently as a few decades ago, Hispanic Americans were viewed primarily as migrant workers in low-level service occupations. Contrast that with today: The average U.S. Hispanic household will spend $538,636 more than the average non-Hispanic white American household over the course of their respective remaining lifetimes, according to the report.
